Few things are more exciting as a conductor than opening a new score. It is the beginning of a musical journey that contains our hopes for a meaningful learning experience and successful performance. And, just like any kind of adventure, starting can feel intimidating and overwhelming. Where does one even begin?

We all know that score study is a vital component of the preparatory work that we as conductors do, regardless of our individual settings. Although our textbooks and coursework mention the need to be adequately prepared, rarely do they provide meaningful details about what this process entails. Rather, our training focuses on conducting gestures and rehearsal techniques.

Score study, however, is a separate endeavor. It is best viewed as a prerequisite step to rehearsing and conducting. A comprehensive approach not only leads to more efficient rehearsals, but also more musical performances.

So, what does it actually mean to study a piece? What steps should be taken and in what order? Do resources exist to help us feel fully prepared before we step onto the podium for the first rehearsal?
